Childhood Sexual Abuse had me wearing a mask to hide my internal pain. I just wanted an end to the pain and I wanted to know what happened to my core self? How had the childhood sexual abuse impacted my ability to be who I am? How had it stripped me of my power and innate strength?
There is no standard response to Childhood Sexual Abuse. As an adult we can feel shock, numbness, overwhelmed, feel like life is out of control, or be tightly holding onto controlling our life. We may have fear that we hide, fear of being alone, fear of others intentions and the fear can seem irrational. We can also doubt our ability to make judgement calls, we can feel shame and guilt because we believe we could have done something different (we couldn’t) . On top of all this we can feel overcome by distrust of others, isolation, afraid we’ll never have a healthy, sexual relationship plus we can feel angry at the world, at God, and not know where to turn, or how to turn our lives around.
Generally speaking we choose relationships craving emotional closeness only to find the person we chose is not willing to be emotionally close. Over time we discover our own challenges with intimacy. People pleasing and meeting everyone else’s needs finds us exhausted and run down, with no one to help us recover. Our social lives are difficult to manage without the benefit of alcohol or other substances. Our family relationships are challenging because we are either believed and then feel guilty for the family break up or we are not believed and treated like we are to blame for the family dysfunction.
Over time our health increasingly suffers. We find everything from increasingly severe migraines, body pain, constant ill health, tiredness, feeling run down, defeated and wondering when the cycle will end. Over the years my clients have also found mental health challenges, substance abuse, obesity and eating disorders have resulted from childhood sexual abuse. The consequences of childhood sexual abuse can also include over-sexualised behaviour with resulting health problems i.e. sexually transmitted diseases and the cost of recovery.
